A note from the Education Department:
The education and participation team is pleased to be able to offer a unique and diverse programme which encompasses a whole range of puppetry styles, techniques and performance. Over the years we have built up a substantial portfolio of varying projects in association with schools, colleges, local authorities, funders and other creative organisations. Within these partnerships we aim to create projects and workshops which encompass the range of educational benefits which can be derived from the puppetry artform.

PROJECTS:
SUSPENSION
This is our flagship project aimed at secondary school pupils and links directly with SUSPENSE London Festival of Adult Puppetry. Inspired by a puppetry performance schools work alongside an experienced puppeteer and puppet maker to create a performance based on the work which they have seen. This project focuses on key concepts of puppet performance, with an introduction to essential puppetry skills and elements of story making. The culmination of this project is a mini-festival which is performed at The Little Angel Theatre by the different drama groups which take part.
Children and the Arts
Funded by The Prince of Wales Trust, this project aims to create a base line for further puppetry performance and exploration within schools. This is a two day project which begins with students coming to The Little Angel to watch a show. Inspired by this visit they spend 2 days with a workshop leader creating puppets and learning how to manipulate them. This story based learning is a great opportunity for schools to work creatively with their classes. After we leave, the teachers spend time developing a story with the children and their puppets, which is performed on the stage at The Little Angel Theatre.
Islington Summer University
This project, for 11-16 year olds, takes place during the summer holidays and is an exciting fusion of animation and puppetry. Most recently the participants worked with Manga comics and films as an inspiration for their work. This three day course gives participants the chance to spend time creating their own puppet character before using this to create a play which will be performed in a showcase at the Little Angel Theatre.
Connexions
- A project for young mothers
Working under the direction of a puppeteer and workshop leader the mums worked together to create a performance which used both a story line and a cast of puppets which they had created themselves. The aim of this project was to create a performance which could be shown to their children (they did an adaptation The Very Hungry Caterpillar). This project focused on areas such as team-work, communication and building confidence.
Creative Partnerships
Little Angel has worked in collaboration with Creative Partnerships to create bespoke projects which take place in a range of contexts, but mostly in the primary sector. At the heart of these projects is an emphasis on creative learning. Little Angel and Creative Partnerships work hard to find new ways of making this possible, creating puppetry projects and workshops to suit each individual class and setting.
Islington Puppet Power
Initiated in 2002, this is a residency that takes place in Islington every summer and is funded by The Cripplegate Foundation.
Pupils come to the theatre to see a show. They meet the puppeteers, have a tour of the theatre and workshop and see a range of puppets on show. Over 6 weeks, they spend a total of 8 days working with a theatre director/story maker and a puppeteer/puppet maker. They devise and script their own play and make puppets and scenery for their production. All the participating groups come together for Puppet Power Festival Days at the Little Angel Theatre at the beginning of July.
One Day Puppet Making WorkshopsThese One day workshops are a great start for schools who want a brief introduction into puppet making. Different courses include shadow puppets, table-top puppets and glove puppets. Classes spend a day working with a puppeteer, making puppets based on a fairy tale theme, which can then be used by the class teachers to develop story-telling and role-play themes. Alternatively this is a great way to compliment one day performance manipulation workshops, which are also on offer at The Little Angel.
Teachers Events and INSET days
Little Angel is keen to promote the use of puppetry as a successful learning tool within schools. Once a term Little Angel provides INSET days, at the theatre, for teachers. These workshops focus on discussions on how to use puppetry within the classroom, with handy tips and advice as to how to achieve this practically. There is also a chance to make a puppet which can be transferred back to the classroom, examples include table-top puppets, glove puppets and marionettes.
We also host a Teacher VIP evening with every new Little Angel Production. As well as getting an peek at the show early in its run, these events offer teachers an exclusive backstage/workshop tour. The education team are also on hand to update on current developments and answer questions on puppetry and education. These events are open teachers, trainers and lecturers at all levels of the education system.
