A fantastical puppet adventure for all!

At Sea is an uplifting tale of a sailor’s triumph over darkness; non verbal, with stunning projections and original music.

Our Sailor loses their way after having their heart compass stolen. Their quest to get it back takes them through a coral reef, a sirens lair and to the very bottom of the ocean. Will they ever find their way back to the surface? Or will they end up trapped in the belly of the beast who steals sailors hearts?

At Sea is suitable for children and adults and deals with themes of friendship, purpose, the challenges of the modern world and internal belief as antidote to despair all told via the metaphor of a grand ocean adventure.

About the Company

Life and Limb Puppets are based in Gateshead in Tyne and Wear And were incorporated in 2014. They have designed and delivered various educational interventions in schools around mental health and well being with large charitable partners. Since 2018 they have pioneered their own unique style of theatrical story telling via the combination of projection and live puppetry, working with organisations such as the National Theatre. Their stories are ‘modern mythic’ inspired by lived experience and musings on the human experience and society and told via timeless epic tales suitable for the whole family.

Age guidance

At Sea is aimed at ages 6-11. Our shows for this age group have storylines that can be followed by children from around age 6. They work for a wide age range and there will be elements to engage the older children, and adults, in the audience, for example music, puppetry techniques, more complex ideas, language or humour. Children under the recommended age can often enjoy the visuals but may not follow everything, and may not stay engaged. If the show contains any parts likely to be scary or upsetting for anyone, these will be mentioned in the FAQ below.

How will we be seated?

This show has standard seating for our studios. There are rows with chairs and soft blocks facing the stage, and mats on the floor at the front. There will be up to 60 people watching the show.

Can children join in?

This isn’t an interactive show and doesn’t have any parts where the audience are asked to contribute. The audience stay in their seats while watching, but you can leave and re-enter the auditorium at any time. The performances on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August will be followed by a short ‘Show and Tell’ (please note this doesn’t apply on the Friday shows).

Is there anything that might be scary?

The story takes place at night / under the sea, so the theatre is quite dark throughout and very dark at times. There are storm scenes with louder music and effects, a sea monster represented with tentacles and a giant eye, and a scene where some merpeople who were thought to be friendly turn out to be hungry monsters.  Although the main character experiences a loss of hope near the end, the show has a grand and uplifting ending where despair is defeated and the character is empowered.
