Relaxed Performance - I Want My Hat Back Trilogy
3:45pm on Saturday 11th April
Aimed at ages 3-6
Duration: 40 minutes approx.
A bear has lost his hat. What if he never sees it again? WAIT! He has seen his hat.
A fish has stolen a hat. And he’ll probably get away with it. Probably.
Two turtles have found a hat. The hat looks good on both of them. But there are two turtles. And there is only one hat.
Jon Klassen’s beloved books, I Want My Hat Back, This is Not My Hat and We Found A Hat, have found a new life of their own LIVE on stage. All your favourites including Bear, Little Fish and the Turtles will be making an appearance in this one-of-a-kind trilogy.
You can view the freesheet for I Want My Hat Back here for more information about the cast and the creative team.
Who is a Relaxed Performance for?
Relaxed Performances are provided for people who would benefit from a more relaxed environment, or are uncomfortable with sudden lighting changes or loud noises, including those with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, sensory or communication needs or a learning disability. During these performances, we have fewer people in the audience and may adapt the show to lower the sound levels and keep the lighting at a higher level so that you are not sitting in darkness. If you require a friend or assistant to sign for you, this is a good performance to come to due to the higher lighting levels.
Relaxed Performances are open for anyone to book, but if the performance is showing as having low availability next to the Book Tickets button, please consider booking at another time to allow these tickets to go to those who would most benefit from them.
Please note that the usual guidance around lower recommended ages applies. Little Angel Theatre is a child friendly, family friendly and inclusive environment. At all Little Angel shows, you can: bring babies and children of any age (but please consider the age recommendations); see the show as an adult or group of adults, without bringing children; leave and re-enter the auditorium at any time; respond vocally. A Relaxed Performance has additional measures in place which are for the benefit of children and adults with additional needs, so we don’t recommend that you book a Relaxed Performance just because you have a baby or toddler or because your child is under the recommended age for the show.
Age Guidance and Relaxed Performances
I Want My Hat Back Trilogy is aimed at ages 3-6. There is nothing really scary in shows for this age group, but they can be a bit more dramatic than those for the youngest children, including in their use of sound and lighting, and characters may face some perils.
This show has standard seating for our studios. There are rows with chairs and soft blocks facing the stage, and some mats on the floor at the front. At the Relaxed Performance there will be up to 45 people watching the show (this is about two thirds of the capacity of the theatre).
This isn’t an interactive style of show, but bookers will be sent a guide for a simple craft activity in advance, and there is a part in the show where children will be invited to wave the fish they have made, or wave their hands if they don’t have a fish. We also welcome vocal responses. You can leave and re-enter the auditorium at any time, and at a Relaxed Performance audience members are also able to move around within the auditorium, although the designated performance area, walkways and fire exits must remain clear at all times.
The play contains three simple, funny and gently paced stories where animal characters act on feelings about ownership, wanting
things and fairness that children of this age can relate to. So there is some conflict, and in the first two stories it is implied
that small animals have been eaten by bigger animals (off stage). The final story shows a friendship. Please also check the visual story, available here, which has more detail and is especially useful for those with autism, sensory processing disorder or associated conditions.
All ages are welcome at our shows and age ranges can only be a rough guide, but please bear in mind that I Want My Hat Back was not specially designed for under-threes. A show aimed at two-year olds would have some differences – those shows are carefully made to hold their attention for the duration, and not to be unsettling for them. Please especially note that the Relaxed Performance is not intended as a performance for babies or children under the recommended age. Our usual guidance around lower recommended ages applies.
Relaxed Performance Tickets
- All tickets are £10 at Relaxed Performances.
- Adults who require another adult to assist them on their visit can book a free ticket for a personal assistant. This is available online, but if it’s your first time booking one you’ll need to contact the box office first so we can add the eligibility tag to your account. Instructions for booking online once your account has been marked as eligible can be found here. Please note that free assistant tickets are not available for those accompanying children.
- For full-price performances we offer a Children’s Access Discount, but this does not apply to Relaxed Performances, where all tickets are already at a lower price than other performances. More info on the discount for full-price performances can be found here.
- If you require a wheelchair space in the auditorium at either of our venues, it is best to book by phone. This is because we need to take extra seats off sale, which is not currently possible with online booking.
- For other seating requirements, you can book tickets online if you prefer, but need to contact Box Office in advance of the performance to reserve seats. You can do this by phone or by email.
