The Storm Whale
22 Nov–24 Jan 2026
A Little Angel Theatre, York Theatre Royal, The Marlowe Theatre and Engine House co-production
Aimed at ages 4-8
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes approx. (including an interval)
Noi lives with his Dad and their six cats by the sea. One spring, while his Dad was busy at work, Noi rescued a little whale that washed up on the beach during a storm. There a friendship began that changed their lives forever.
The following winter Noi’s Dad takes one last trip in his fishing boat. Noi is alone once more and longs to see his friend again. He waits and watches, watches and waits… will it take another winter storm to bring them back together again?
Benji Davies’ tender and heart-warming children’s stories of friendship, love and courage are brought to life as one enchanting theatre show.
Age guidance
The Storm Whale is aimed at ages 4-8. Our shows for this age group have storylines that can be followed and enjoyed by children from around age 4, and require a little more concentration than shows recommended from age 3. They may also use slightly more complex ideas, humour, dialogue or song lyrics that older children will get more out of. There is nothing really scary in these shows but they can be a bit more dramatic than those for the youngest children, including in their use of sound and lighting, and characters may face some perils.
There are chairs and soft blocks around three sides of the stage. There will be up to 70 people watching the show. If you come when there are school groups there will be some mats on the floor as well, and there may be more people in the audience.
This isn’t an interactive performance, and doesn’t have any parts where the audience are asked to contribute, but we welcome vocal responses from young audiences enjoying the show. The audience stay in their seats while watching, but you can leave and re-enter the auditorium at any time.
The theatre gets dark for some scenes that take place at night, and there is some mild peril when Noi goes looking for his dad and the boat is stuck in the ice, but he is soon rescued. The stories celebrate Noi’s friendship with the whale and his loving relationship with his dad. As part of this, at times he expresses feelings of loneliness, and there are a few references to an absent mum, but we see how his adventures help him to feel happy and secure.
All ages are welcome at our shows and age ranges can only be a rough guide, but please bear in mind that our shows recommended from age 4 are a little different from our shows recommended from age 3. The production has built on the simple stories from the books and the language and pace of the storytelling are pitched at a slightly older age group. Younger children may get a little restless.
The show is based on the books The Storm Whale and The Storm Whale in Winter by Benji Davies, but please bear in mind that the production has a lot of original dialogue not taken from the books. You can buy the books from us here.
A visual story for The Storm Whale will be available soon.

Little Angel Theatre is a magical place. They have brought many of my books to life on stage, and they do so creatively whilst remaining faithful to the books. It is wonderful to see so many children enjoying this special THEATRE.
