Hands On: Puppet Construction
20 May 2026
Duration: 7pm - 8.30pm
In this practical session, we’ll explore some basics of puppet construction, joints and rods. Using recycling, junk and objects, participants will leave the session armed with all the basics needed to get started making their own puppets at home, out of whatever they can get their hands on! An exploratory session perfect for those with some puppetry experience who’d like to know more about making. It’s a chance to explore new creative ideas and experiment with how different materials can inform character, with the chance to try out the freshly made puppets at the end of the session.
Our ‘Hands On’ sessions are designed to be fun, highly practical and accessible to adults, no experience necessary – just a desire to learn, give things a go and get stuck in!
Each session will have a different and specific focus, and we will spend the hour and a half diving deep into our area of focus through practical exploration. Most of our ‘Hands On’ courses focus on the performative side of puppetry, but occasionally we will look at a focus subject through the lens of design and making (if so, this will be outlined in the event overview). This means the sessions are especially suited to people wanting to develop their performance technique, as well as practical skills in devising and creating theatre with puppetry.
Past Hands On sessions have focused on areas including: Ensemble Puppetry, Objects, Feet, Animals, Paper, Silly, Devising, Music and many more. Keep coming to expand your knowledge and get some puppeteering practice in.
