Plan your visit

Prepare yourself for a musical voyage full of stories, songs and the sea… Upon a distant shore, a lonely lighthouse keeper has grown fearful of the sea and its wild and stormy nature. But when a mysterious stranger appears with songs of the sea’s magic and power, the keeper is forced to confront his fears and slowly rediscover the beauty of the ocean that surrounds him. Featuring storytelling, traditional music, original songs and spellbinding puppetry.

Age Guidance

Tales from the Lighthouse is aimed at ages 5-11. Our shows for this age group have storylines that can be followed by children from around age 5. They work for a wide age range and there will be elements to engage the older children, and adults, in the audience, for example music, puppetry techniques, more complex ideas, language or humour. Children under the recommended age can often enjoy the visuals but may not follow everything, and may not stay engaged. If the show contains any parts likely to be scary or upsetting for anyone, these will be mentioned in the FAQ below.

How will we be seated?

This show has standard theatre seating – rows of benches facing the stage. There will be up to 90 people watching the show.

Can children join in?

There are points where the cast and puppets will come into the audience, and sometimes give audience members objects to hold.  The audience stay in their seats while watching, but you can leave and re-enter the auditorium at any time.

Is there anything that might be scary or sad?

At one point the lighthouse keeper loses a ship, and we see him react to this, panicking and becoming withdrawn. The lighting also reflects this with a deep red wash. This is done gently and the second part of the show is all about resolving the lighthouse keeper’s fears and anxiety, allowing him to trust the ocean again and embrace its beauty and magic.

Is the show difficult for younger children to follow?

The exploration of the character’s feelings, and the methods of storytelling, will be best appreciated by those of the recommended age and above. The audience need to pay quite close attention to follow the detail of the story, much of which is told through puppetry and music rather than with narration or dialogue.
