Mixed Media Music Marionettes – #MMMM

Our youth company will be working with a professional puppet maker to make their own puppets.

This term at Youth Theatre members will be working with professional puppet maker Catherine Thomas (www.catherinethomaspuppets.com) to make their own short string marionette puppets suitable for appearing in a music video. Together the group will choose three or four songs that would work well with puppetry and members will design and make a puppet character that could feature in a music video for one of the songs.

The marionettes will be made from mixed materials, including wood, wire, papier mâché and foam rubber, then decorated & costumed before attaching strings to the control and learning how to move the finished puppets.

Marionettes are particularly great for music videos because the puppeteer can control the puppet from above without appearing in the shot and this type of puppet has very expressive movement.

Please note, this term is a puppet making term, so the focus is on building a detailed puppet. There won’t be a big performance at the end of the term, however look out for our Youth Theatre Summer Studios Takeover this August which will include music video production using puppetry workshop where we will continue to work with marionettes and make music videos using the puppets made this term, alongside some Little Angel Puppets.

Our Youth Theatre have recently created two highly acclaimed puppetry productions, in 2014, Macbeth: The One Half World (link to film clip) and most recently in March 2015 a stunning version of The Jabberwocky, both directed by Oliver Hymans.
