Creating Theatre and Interactive Experiences for Early Years

The course will be delivered in-person over 2 days and explore approaches to co-creating performative and playful experiences for very young children and their families. Joy will present a framework of reference drawn from her own experience and draw on national and international models of creative practice including performance, installation and interactions in varying spaces that follow and learn from the unique perspectives of young children. The structure includes practical exercises to explore ideas and develop approaches through materials based work incorporating multidisciplinary approaches of puppetry, movement, light, sound and digital.

About the tutor:

Joy Haynes has over 30 years experience working as a designer and theatre maker, director and performer. She is a passionate advocate for the development and recognition of Puppetry as a distinct and vibrant art-form in the UK. She is currently working as a Producer for Curious School of Puppetry. Joy is committed to building Early Years (EY) arts into the mainstream and increasing respect for the competency of young children as participants and collaborators.

In 2015 Joy collaborated with Royal Opera House and Polka Theatre to direct the innovative multi-disciplinary performance ‘Dot Squiggle and Rest ’and ‘Three Colours ’created in partnership with NPT and Polka Theatre in 2014 successfully toured China twice over 2016/17. In 2016 she was invited by Little Angel Theatre to adapt and direct Tim Hopgood’s illustrated book ‘Wow Said the Owl ’for EY audiences and in 2018 the sequel Wow It’s Night-time. She is currently a director for Magic AcornsCIC, an EY arts development organisation in the East of England.
